A Study on the effects of the moxibustion on the osteoporosis induced by ovariectomy in the rats

Abstract
n oder to investigate the effect of the moxibution treated on Shinsu(BL23) and Yoyang-gwan(GV3) locus on the estrogen-deficiency osteoporosis induced by ovariectomy in the rats, the histological and scainning electron microscopical changes, changes of the number of the calcitonin-immunoreactive cells in the thyroid gland and serum osteocalcin, estradiol, progesterone, follicular-stimulating hormone(FSH), calcium(Ca) and phosphorus(P) levels were monitored.
The results were as follows :
1. Histologically, bony matrix were observed by compact texture in the Sham groups and no interosteocyte spaces were detected but formations of holes by Ca leakage were detected in control groups and haversian canals of control groups were expaned. In the moxibution groups, interosteocyte spaces were decreased compared with control groups but the small cracks in the bony matrix were observed. Compared between moxibution treated on Shinsu locus and Yoyang-gwan locus groups, the spaces of the interosteocyte and haversian canal located on bony matrix of Yoyang-gwan groups were more numerous and severed than Shinsu groups.
2. Scanning electron microscopically, the compact bony matrix were observed in Sham groups but in the control groups, very deepen and widen spaces were observed in bony matrix and the holes induced by leakages of Ca were detected in the surface, and these holes and spaces were decresed in moxibution groups but small numbers of holes were observed in moxibustion treated on Yoyang-gwan groups. Compared between moxibution treated on Shinsu locus and Yoyang-gwan locus groups, the holes and spaces located on bony matrix of Yoyang-gwan groups were more numerous and severed than Shinsu groups.
3. Immnuohistochemically, numerous calcitonin-immunoreactive cells that containing compact granule were detected in parafollicular and interfollicular regions of thyroid gland of Sham groups but in control group, degranulation of calcitonin-immunoreactive cells were observed. In the moxibustion groups, degranulation of calcitonin-immunoreactive cells were decreased compared with control groups. The numbers of calcitonin-immunoreactive cells were decreased significant in control groups(36.75¡¾8.86) compared with Sam groups(112.38¡¾6.78). In the moxibustion treated on Shinsu(63.38¡¾11.29) and Yoyang-gwan(59.25¡¾10.04) locus groups the numbers were significantly(p<0.01) increased compared with control group.
4. Serum osteocalcin level was increased in control group(0.34¡¾0.05??/§¢) compared with Sham group(0.26¡¾0.03??/§¢) but significantly(p<0.05)fdecreased in moxbution treated group on Shinsu locus(0.28¡¾0.03??/§¢) but significantly(p<0.05)decreased in moxbution treated group on Shinsu locus(0.28¡¾0.03??/§¢). In the moxibution treated group on Yoyang-gwan locus, the level(0.30¡¾0.03??/§¢) was decreased compared with control group but no significant were observed.
5. Serum estradiol level was decreased in control group(10.38¡¾0.53??/§¢) compared with Sham group(18.66¡¾0.45??/§¢) but significantly(p<0.05) increased in moxbution treated group on Shinsu locus (13.67¡¾2.11??/§¢). In the moxibution treated group on Yoyang-gwan locus , the level(11.79¡¾1.88??/§¢) was increased compared with control group but no significant were observed.
6. Serum progesterone level was decreased in control group(35.51¡¾1.09??/§¢) compared with Sham group(65.31¡¾3.43??/§¢) but significantly(p<0.01) increased in moxbution treated group on Shinsu locus (54.18¡¾4.71??/§¢) and moxibution treated group on Yoyang-gwan locus (43.12¡¾2.90??/§¢).
7. Serum FSH level was increased in control group(400.35¡¾1.87??/§¢) compared with Sham group(280.33¡¾6.26??/§¢) but significantly(p<0.01) decreased in moxbution treated group on Shinsu locus (299.72¡¾21.96??/§¢) and moxibution treated group on Yoyang-gwan locus (380.44¡¾16.31??/§¢).
8. Serum Calcium level was decreased in control group(10.82¡¾0.90??/§¢) compared with Sham group(14.57¡¾0.38??/§¢) but significantly(p<0.01) increased in moxbution treated group on Shinsu locus (13.04¡¾0.90??/§¢). In the moxibution treated group on Yoyang-gwan locus, the level(11.35¡¾0.80??/§¢) was increased compared with control group but no significant were observed.
9. Serum Phosphorus level was increased in control group(7.11¡¾0.70??/§¢) compared with Sham group(5.65¡¾0.71??/§¢) but significantly(p<0.05) decreased in moxbution treated group on Shinsu locus(6.17¡¾0.58??/§¢). In the moxibution treated group on Yoyang-gwan locus group, the level(7.04¡¾0.16g/§¢) was decreased compared with control group but no significant were observed.
According to these results, the moxibution treated group on Shinsu and Yoyang-gwan locus has favorable effect on treatment and prevention of osteoporosis induced by ovariectomy in rats: Compared between moxibution treated group on Shinsu locus and Yoyang-gwan locus, Shinsu locus was more effective than Yoyang-gwan locus to the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis induced by ovariectomy.
